Therapists
Choosing the right therapist is important because therapy is not only about techniques or theories, but also it is fundamentally about relationship, trust, and fit.  For the person who suffers with OCD/Scrupulosity it is essential that the therapist is a person who:
1. Enables Trust and Safety
A person must feel safe enough to speak honestly about painful, confusing, or embarrassing experiences. A good therapeutic match creates a space where someone can open up without fear of judgment. Without that trust, progress is very difficult.
2. Understands the Client’s Needs
Different therapists specialize in different areas—such as trauma, grief, anxiety, family systems, or spiritual concerns. For many people, faith, culture, and moral values are central to their identity. A therapist who respects these beliefs helps the client integrate psychological healing with their deeper beliefs.
3. Encourages Real Change
The right therapist:
- listens carefully
- challenges when needed
- helps build skills
- supports accountability
Eric Collins, MD
Psychiatrist
I am a psychiatrist based out of the Detroit area. I can treat patients for a wide variety of mental health conditions, but I have an affinity for those afflicted with OCD. I have practiced the Catholic faith for my entire life, and I know many others who have as well; I understand the impact that scrupulosity can have on one’s spirituality. I work in two practices, one of which is MyCatholicDoctor, a national telehealth platform for medical treatment (see my online profile linked below). Consequently, I am licensed in 13 states; those states include about 40% of the US population.
